Coffee Table Styling: The How-To Guide

I love styling a coffee table. It’s such a simple and easy way to change up your decor! There are endless options and it would be impossible to show you all of them in one blog post. But if you’re like me and you over-think these things, I thought it may be useful to share my top tips to styling your coffee table.

It is best is to go for something stylish yet practical. You still want to ensure you have room for that glass of wine or cup of tea! In my examples, I’ve just grabbed things from around my house to demonstrate the different ways in which you can style your coffee table. So go ahead and shop your home, and have a play around!

Where do I begin?

Confirm Colour Palette

You’ll want the accessories on the table to compliment the rest of the room by ensuring the they are of the same or similar colour scheme. Of course it’s also okay to go bold with colour, but you want to make sure it flows with the rest of the room’s existing decor. In my home, I’ve stuck with the monochrome look, but with pops of gold and green.

Section The Table

You then need to decide on how many sections you’d like on the table. My go to is 2 sections as my table isn’t very large, so this will depend on the size of your table. So let’s go into this in more detail!

How to Section

The simplest way to section up your table is with trays or books. Trays are great for making your decorative items look more organised and well thought out. While stacking books adds height, to allow you to showcase your favourite pieces. When using books, ensure the largest ones are on the bottom, and the smallest on top. It’s better for a more coherent look to go for large coffee table books that match or complement the colour scheme. (Check out second hand books to keep the costs down!)

Here are some examples of how you can section your table:

We begin with one section, with items elevated by coffee table books. This is ideal for smaller coffee tables, or coffee tables that are frequently used.

Here we have two sections, both sectioned with coffee table books. This is ideal for less frequently used tables, or larger tables.

Three sections are a bold statement, and are a lot of fun to style. Note the third section here is identified with a taller object, sat directly on the table.

Style Tips

So now you know what your colour scheme is, and how you can section your table, I will share with you my top styling tips to nail that perfect look.

Rule of Odd Numbers

Odd numbers are appealing to the eye. If you read my shelfie post, you’ll have seen I mentioned about this little rule there, and this is the same principle. You’ll notice in most of the clusters of accessories, they are in odd numbers, normally ones or threes. But where this isn’t the case, the overall amount of sections is odd. (Even the books are stacked in odd numbers!)

Vary Height

Go for a variety of heights across your objects, this adds interest and draws the eye to multiple levels. This means within the clusters and across the whole table. Do this by placing objects on stacks of books, on the coffee table itself and trays, as well as the objects themselves being taller and shorter in height.

Add Nature

Adding flowers (real or faux) or greenery or anything organic adds life to the tablescape, making it feel more homely. This is also an easy way to add height.

Object Ideas

If you’re stuck for ideas on what to showcase on your table, look for personal objects that tell a story, or functional yet stylish pieces like a candle snuffer. Other ideas are decorative sculptures, souvenirs from places you’ve travelled, candles or vases too! The possibilities are endless!

So, here’s a quick summary of all the tips combined!

Budget Tips

It wouldn’t be one of my blog posts if I didn’t tell you how could achieve this on a budget now would it?! Here are some of my budget friendly tips!

  • Buy second hand coffee table books: think Amazon marketplace, eBay, charity shops and car boot sales!
  • Pop into charity shops or antiques shops for decorative objects without breaking the bank
  • Spray paint!: If you do find objects you love, but they won’t match your scheme, go ahead and spray paint them to match!
  • Faux flowers: Constantly adding fresh flowers can get expensive, so there’s nothing wrong with some gorgeous faux flowers!
  • Find it in nature: If you’re out on a walk, you never know you may find something that inspires you!

I hope these tips have helped!
